Borderlands Save Editor (Revision 10)

This editor is no longer being updated and does not support newer Borderlands patches. It is highly recommended that you use WillowTree# instead.

Newer build of my Borderlands save editor, fixes the problem with editing Roland (Soldier) saves, as well as several other minor changes and fixes.

  1. i2 says:

how can i get in contact with you?

i have some information about editing save files i want to share 🙂

  2. Rick says:

Like what? Why not just comment here?

  3. Khan says:

Would you happen to have a list of weapons that you have compiled, or is there are way with your current editor to make a weapon creator. You create the weapon, damage, clip size etc, and then sync it with the save editor?

  4. Trigen says:

Any chance on making an item editor? Or just as good an itemviewer? It’s really annoying at the moment because you can only see the first 4 bonuses on any given gun even if there are more… allowing us to see the mods on our guns would be amazing if it’s possible!

  5. Rick says:

Khan – I have not made any master list, some other people have. Making a better editor for weapons / items is in the works.
    Trigen – In the works.

  6. Lucretius says:

Also, in next revision enabling the fast travel system and the quests

Remember back in the days of diablo 2 the jamella editor? 🙂 you were able to edit the inventory and the quest status with that

  7. Bonzay0 says:

Well I will be working on a weapon generator but it will take time (a lot because I don’t have some much time for myself either)
the generator will be used with Rick’s editor. any way if Rick or some one else that working on a generator want’s item list like itemgrade list and the other stuff
needed to build a weapon I have most of it (kinda)

any way don’t expect anything soon in this month because I will need a lot time to test all of the weapon parts and stuff and then put them into a generator…
I’m not a pro so don’t get your hopes up.

  8. Elexar says:

This is completely safe to use with the Steam version, right? (yeah i’m paranoid as that)

  9. Thomas says:

i had a go at generating weapons with Rick’s tool here, it does work but it has limited function. Use the files in the localisation>INT folder for some parameters.

  10. Bonzay0 says:

the localization/int does give you most of the info needed for the weapon by it does not give you the itemgrade which is needed too…
but still you need to know which part goes where… you might end up making a weapong that crash your game or corupting your savegame
or just a weird looking weapon.
any way I’m going to start making the generator only this weekend so for the rest of the time I’m going to test out what goes where.

  11. Juhani says:

Just wanted to say thank you.

    So thanks 🙂

    a lot.

  12. Havoc says:

I’m getting the wrong amount of money reported to me in the editor. i have around 150,000 but it is saying i have only 80 o_0.

i also have a quesion! in the weapon editor what does quality mean? tbh i don’t know what to do in the weapon/item tabs so i haven’t touched them. could you provide some sort of read me to describe how to work in the weapons/items tab?

  13. Marshall says:

I’d like to know if there’s a way to edit what playthrough your save is on. If you’d like, I have a save with a character who just finished his first.

  14. Dubwise says:

Hi I get ‘The application failed to initialize poperly (0xc0000135). on ver 10

  15. Cloud Dog says:

    Awesome work.

  16. Rick says:

Havoc – Did you actually open your save? 80 is the default money, IIRC.
    Marshall – Why?
    Dubwise – Installed .NET 3.5.

  17. i2 says:

level and backpack size dont load in the editor when each are set to 65535 (game’s max)
money loads as 80 (i’m not even sure how much i have …. costs me about 5million when i die… so… lol)

rick you have some way to contact you other than these silly comments?

  18. i2 says:

also: when you have a few hundred weapons in your backpack the editor takes FOREVER to display them, and sometimes it just locks it up.

  19. Rick says:

Why are you setting them so ridiculously high? That’s retarded.

  20. i2 says:

If you’re going to break the game why not BREAK IT TO THE MAX?

  21. Rick says:

    Because it’s retarded.

  22. Lauren-Kitten says:

    Hello!

Anyone know how to mess with the color codes properly? I don’t want to put in random values, and was wondering if there’s some kind of FF generator or chart >:3

  23. i2 says:

    kitten:
    http://html-color-codes.com/

    this will get you started

  24. Havoc says:

    Rick:
Yeah i opened my saved game it says im level 42 like i should be and displays the items i have in my inventory and the perks or whatever they are called and the level they are. if i change anything to file and leave the money set to 80 i lose everything (which isn’t a big deal since i can just edit it back but still). the money is displaying correctly now though and has only displayed the wrong money twice.

  25. Trigen says:

So Rick, I did some hex snooping and i noticed that even if 2 different weapons are exactly the same in hex they do no have the same stats in game…. which obviously means that there is something in the file in another location keeping track of the level/tier of the weapons… also removing all of the mods/accesories from a weapon will still leave it with some innate bonuses (+some % accuracy ect ect… ) this means that those most also be kept in another location….

    Any thoughts?

  26. Trigen says:

Wait NM! I’m stupid, I never checked the individual numbers/letters surrounded by 00 00’s until now, seems they’re the key

  27. Trigen says:

AHH HAH! Gun required level is determined somewhere else, i manged to take 2 weapons 1 requiring level 36, the other needing 43…. I made it so their item definitions were exactly the same (As confirmed by HexDen my hex editor) and they had exactly the same stats to a T, even in debugmode they looked exactly alike… However, 1 of them still required level 36 and the other still required 43… meaning they the level of the item is held somewhere else in the save file, and not where the rest of the item definitions are! Hah! ;-D

Gibbed’s Borderlands Save Editor (Revision 10)
Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

unsupported Borderlands save file version (33554432)

    Details: http://pastie.org/679701.txt

  29. Rick says:

Trigen – Required level is determined from the Quality value, all weapon data is presented correctly, there is no other weapon data in the save than what it is already presented.
dex – Revision 10 doesn’t support PS3/360 saves, that will come in the next version.

  30. Trigen says:

Where is weapon data held in the file then? I’m at a loss as going through the save files in hex i cannot for the life of me find it…

  31. Trigen says:

Erm i mean where is Quality value held lol, sorry i’m tired

  32. Rick says:

Why don’t you just use my save editor?

  33. Trigen says:

OOOO nm i found it, changed the QL in your editor then compared the files ;-D

  34. i2 says:

quality values are in the 12bytes following the last bit of item data
tier is the 6th byte – this changes level req’s and scales stats.

  35. Trigen says:

Hmm, it seems the mods on a game (such as Malevolent) may limit the QL? I only ask because I changed the QL on my hellfire and the damage scaled up…. however when i did the same on another gun of mine it did nothing…. reading the SMG definitions i noticed that Malevolent is listed as a tier 3 addon….

  36. Trigen says:

erm on a gun, wow i really can’t type tonight

  37. OmegaZero_Alpha says:

I noticed that changing the brand to jakobs ruins a lot of guns (removing the quality value regardless of what it was set to) (could be part interactions?)

  38. Lucretius says:

Can someone upload a completed savegame of the first playthrough,(just before giving the key for the money, or at the start of the second playthrough the class isnt important) ? I just want to explore and farming thanks , appreciated

ps i dont use it online only on single player thanks .

  39. Somedude says:

Hi Rick, nice editor! I found this just when I was getting tired of trying to figure out the hex in my save file, great work!
Also, I was wondering, is there a way to copy some guns from 1 character to the other? I noticed there is the duplicate button, but it only duplicates in the same character right?
Anything like copy n paste? Cuz I really like my infinite ammo gun… xD Thanks!

  40. Somedude says:

Oh 1 more question, the editor lags heavily/or stop responding when the game is running, even when I am just at the main menu of the game and not loading any save files, any idea as to why is that?
    Thanks again!

  41. Arca says:

Really useful. I hacked proper scopes onto my sniper rifles because I was tired of getting 1.0x or 1.5x scopes on a perfectly good rifle.

Each weapon seems to have five levels of scope (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 – 1_ and 2_ in place of 1 and 2 for shotgun, for some reason) and entering another number or anything else will mean there is no scope at all. Listed below in order from 1 to 5 (smallest zoom to largest zoom). I’ve heard of other zoom levels but I’ve never found any so I can’t check the save data for the specifics.

    Repeater: 1.8x, 2.6x, 3.1x, 4.1x, 4.7x
    Revolver: 1.6x, 2.3x, 2.8x, 3.7x, 4.2x
    SMG: 1.7x, 2.4x, 2.9x, 3.9x, 4.3x
    Shotgun: 1.5x, 2.2x, 2.7x, 3.6x, 4.0x
    Combat Rifle: 1.4x, 2.0x, 2.4x, 3.2x, 3.6x
    Sniper Rifle: 1.0x, 1.5x, 1.8x, 2.4x, 2.7x
    Rocket Launcher: 1.9x, 2.7x, 3.3x, 4.3x, 4.9x

  42. DataSchmuck says:

So I edited the willowgame.ini file to give myself 4 weapon slots from the start of the game. When I did the claptrap missions that add 2 extra weapon slots, they worked, giving me 6 slots. Unfortunately, the extra 2 slots are not selectable in the backpack, and when I pick up new weapons they automatically get sent to those un-selectable slots. The only way to get them out is to sell them and then buy them back. Can the save-game editor be updated to edit the amount of weapon slots so I can set it back to 4? Changing the willowgame.ini setting back to 2 didn’t work.

  43. JB says:

I just thought of something. Has anyone tried the following:

    1) Max out the skills for the current character
    2) Modify the class (Lilith to Mordecai)
    3) Add Skill Points
    4) Load game and add new class skills to the new class character

In theory, could you make a character that had maxed out all skills from all classes?

I know it would take some fun out things, but it would be interesting. I’m also curious what happens when you use your class skill. For example will Mordecai Batwing fly out as well as Lilith’s Phasestrike buff? Then again, it probably would just crash the game…

    • DM4N20 says:

if it’s anything like the other gibbed’s i’ve used, it would reset all of your skills to 0 when you change classes, with everything else N/A.

  44. Rumpfriction says:

been browsing the game files, going off of what you guys have been saying, but i have been able to figure out the variable that edits the mutiplier value, x7, x9 etc. im trying to do it with a revolver and ive played with every set of parts i could to add that value? anyone have any insight on how to add that?

  45. Matt says:

Got a suggestion for ya for the next version, fairly simple to do but would be a neat feature for the newly added toolbar on weapons/items. Save and Load buttons, so you can save the selected weapon/item, give the file to a friend so they can load it in their player. Or even a forum people could be sharing weapons and such. Speaking of which, do you have a forum for this site?

  46. DaFox says:

Hey Rick, nice app that you’ve got here, I actually just started working on a read-only Borderlands save viewer as to learn some file reverse engineering and C#. So far all I have is some pretty bad save verification and i’m now trying to figure out the best way to go about reading potentially near random info such as the characters name. Will you ever release the source for this? (not that it will help me much as it seems WAY over my head, but hopefully I could find bits and pieces to learn from)

  47. Marshall says:

Hey Rick! The only reason I’m curious about the playthrough setting is just being able to start anew (with some friends) and everyone kind of in “endgame” mode with all the fights being against higher-level foes.

By the way, I’ve used this save editor extensively, along with Steam Achievement Manager, and I’ve got all my friends using them as well. What you do in your spare time is way more productive than what I do in mine, for sure!
