  1. Geese says:

    Cannot work for me !
I choose the file, at the end of extraction (11 files recognized) windows 7 must close. Error.

  2. Mob says:

crashes under vista. says something about missing package.

  3. kiss_a says:

support, the program crashes when converting

  4. Van says:

Works for me (under vista, no problems). I couldn’t find how to tell vpk where to extract files, so had to use this tool 🙂 Thanks.
A way to browse the .vpk and choose what files to extract would be nice. I just wanted to look at standard l4d particles and had to unpack the whole left4dead pak for that.

  5. mat says:

yeah. does not work for me either. trying to extract maps from .vpk’s from l4dmaps. using vista. will try xp now

  6. lipex says:

it only work for ‘*_dir.vpk’ files, not for extract maps. :s

  7. Alex says:

This doesn’t work with regular VPK files

  8. Mike says:

If I can’t use it to unpack maps, what good is it?

  9. Zak says:

I need HELP! I am trying to make a mod work, and it requires extracting pak01_dir.vpk to prevent purple/black squares from appearing on textured models and surfaces, but this program WILL NOT extract it (despite it being the RIGHT FILE TYPE!) Left 4 Bread & Butter: Super Mod Compilation 1.1 is the name of the mod. I also tested the mod, and it had purple/black on certain textures and different things. My email is Zak.Elias@gmail.com, and PLZ contact me for the solution for my problem.

  10. Chris says:

Having the same problem, gives an error when I try to extract it. “Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click continue the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click quite, the application will close.
    Invalid terminator.”

I click continue and it takes me back to the blank extractor. I have missing and purple textures all over the game, makes it un-playable. =/

  11. Alex says:

I’m having the same problem. It may be because my laptop has windows 7 x64 installed. My other laptop has windows 7 x32 and can extract it halfway then crash. Can someone possibly upload a zipped file with all the extracted data that can be extracted back into the folders?

  12. Rick says:

Link me to a download of the vpks you are trying to extract and I can take a look.

  13. Alex says:

I think it’s just the main pak01_dir from left 4 dead. http://www.filefront.com/13663054/pak01_dir.vpk I think that’s it, if you don’t have it. Thanks in advance.

  14. jake says:

    please give me l4d extractor

  15. Jaden says:

I really wonder, why the hell Valve want to make something like this so difficult when CSS’ skin replacements are always easier. That so called VPK file is only making skin installation more difficult, easy to the Valve dev team, but what about us regular players & skinners? A**hole!

  16. Gordon says:

Hello. Could you please make an extractor mimicking the l4d .vpk extractor, but supporting the l4d2 .vpk files?

  17. Rick says:

    When L4D2 is out, sure.

  18. Fearlezz says:

The L4D2 demo is out, you can pre load it now if you’ve bought it.

  19. Rick says:

No, it’s not out. The preload is encrypted.

  20. Fearlezz says:

True, but you can still access the vpk files and gcf’s, right? I tried to extract the vpk but it said that 0 files where extracted.

  21. Rick says:

Very unlikely, given that the data is encrypted.

  22. Fearlezz says:

Yeah your right. You cant use any of the files. They are all locked. I have a decode code. If I had any idea how to use it..

  23. Gordon says:

Nevermind it’s working now. Thanks for the great tool anyway.

Hahaha, the last four comments are the most entertaining thing I’ve seen on my blog so far.

  29. DudeMan says:

Seems to work just fine with both L4D and L4D2.

Don’t let the haters get to you. Your progie is awesome, and saves a ton of time compared to using the DOS-Like monstrosity that is vpk.exe 🙂

  30. Jim says:

Hey, I’ve tried using your tool, but it stops working part-way through, after extracting a few things (and not the things I need). I’m doin’ this on L4D2, but I know this program works for L4D2. Have any clue what’s goin’ wrong?

  31. hachimaki says:

you say its for vpk not _dir.vpk…. thats useless……

  32. cameleot says:

hm.. whenever I try to extract l4d2 files, it stops and crashes at: d:\mdurand_steamimage\l4d2\rel\steam_images\left4dead2\left4dead2\scripts\vscripts\carnival_games\gallery_copy_counters.nuc

    • Brian says:

      Hey cameleot,

I’m having the same issue. It extracts all of the script files fine, and then when it hits this one file, supposedly stored on a volume “d:”, it crashes. All of the script files previous to it have a relative path “\scripts\yadda yadda yadda” So maybe it’s a problem with the way the vpk file structure is setup? Anyhow, just figured I’d let you guys know that it doesn’t seem to be an isolated incident to crash at this file when extracting the l4d2 vpk’s.

  33. Robert says:

Hi Rick, just want to say thanks for all the great tools you release. I’ve used DF Tweak as well; before I didn’t realise just how much you did! Good show!

However, using it on the L4D2 content gives the message cameleot reports above. HTH!

  34. 766 says:

Oh hi! First to all thanks for this tool, but I have a little problem.

When I try to extract the files, an error message appears with the code (0xc0000135). I don’t know what I can do, so please, help me, I need the pills for Gmod. D=

  35. TimEh says:

Not sure why everyone is bashing this tool. worked perfect first try for the L4D2 vpk’s. Thanks

  36. Qeex says:

    Hey there,

    Trying to extracted L4D2’s pak_01_dir.vpk, but whenever I attempt to it says;

    0 files in package.
    Done, 0 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 total.

Could someone please enlighten me as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

  37. Jim says:

I started up Gibbed’s .vpk, and

    • Jim says:

      Sorry-Accident with keyboard
And it says ‘error’ I hit continue, and it decides to NOT do ANYTHING.
Do I need to take the files somewhere (all 3 in package) in program files or c:\ ?

  38. babak says:

well the gibbed version is pretty useless…i downloaded l4d2 and cant install it cause it has the installer files missing thanks to the linatic who uploaded it without checking first…

well i wanna extract the vpk files and i dont have the game installed so vpk.exe is no option…

gibbed version of the exctarctor is asking for a directory path and whatever directory i choose it says its invalid and it wont allow unpacking…

why couldnt the gibbed programmers make it available to be extracted just to any directory i mean wtf?

this is how i can see there are truely retarded people living on this planet…

those who upload large size game and it does not work and those who make cracks that dont work…

what are they on crack ice or something?

  39. Ben says:

I used this tool and found that on my home computer (running Vista) the L4D content extracted with no problems but the L4D2 content extracted for just a couple seconds and then crashed (looks like only a “scripts” folder made it through). On my work computer (running XP) the L4D2 content extracted without any problems and I would assume the L4D stuff would work fine too. So, a Vista (and maybe Windows 7) crash bug?

  42. Jeff says:

How do I put my stuff back into a .vpk file if I don’t have vpk.exe on my machine?

  43. Mateos says:

It crashes during extractions on this message:

    Hope it could help 🙂

  44. rome says:

    i finnaly found the shit…

  45. MadGaz says:

I am Having the same issues as Ben and Mateos. Crashes at the same place for L4D2 extract.
I tried Compatibility mode for XP SP2 & SP3 but that didnt help. I am running windows 7 64bit.
I do not have L4D installed to try that.
Not sure I have provided any info that can be helpful but hey, I tried!

  46. chris k says:

Ok most of the time when i extract file pak01_dir.vpk it crashes on almost anything
    never completes it.

Windows XP service pack 3 here

    Can you find out.

  47. Lynn says:

This is kind of embarrassing…where do I find the files? I opened up the extractor, and that’s about as far as I got.

  48. Bill says:

    does this work for l4d2?
