Saints Row 2: Resolution Editor

UPDATE: This editor should no longer be necessary as of Patch #2 (released 02/17/2009) which adds support for detection of 16:9/16:10 resolutions.

Since the game does not properly detect 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions, I’ve made an editor which can edit settings.dat for the resolution you specify.

The game appears to operate just fine with resolutions such as 1440×900 and 1680×1050.

Saints Row 2 Resolution Editor

Requires .NET 2.0.

Thanks a ton! This worked great.

  2. SynaGl0w says:

On the release day of the game there is already a user created utility to fix something… Epic!

Thanks a lot for this! =D

  3. Whois says:

While this works….if steam does a version check on your game the steam client WILL overwrite the altered file with the one on the master server. Making it necessary to apply this multiple times until Volition releases a patch.

  4. Rick says:

Uh? settings.dat isn’t a part of the normal distribution of SR2, it’s created by the game when it first starts.

  5. Bartes says:

Please, can you also make a tool to change the language? Hate the translation in my native language, it’s horrible.

  6. Zeth says:

Hmmm sad that you stoped making something for GTA 😀

  10. Rick says:

Dings: You can use Alice for GTA4 to call UNLOCK_ACHIEVEMENT (I believe that’s the native function).

Do we need to place the file in a particular folder? Or can just launch it from wherever we like? Because it seems that it does not work for me :/ when I launch the game I get an info that the graphic changes were not saved and they are restored to defaults… Aha.. and will it work with NET 3.0?

  15. Oskar says:

maybe you can do a graphic patch for those players who have old computer on the oblivion game there was a patch called oldblivion that was for those who played with older compuers with older graphic cards. please check this website http://www.oldblivion.com/

  30. Simbadda says:

where is the file “settings.dat” located. i can’t seem to find this file in this location “C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row 2”.

  31. Simbadda says:

never mind my post, i found it in “C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\THQ\Saints Row 2\”

i’ve set it to 1440×900 (according to the tool), the game just doesn’t look like it’s rendered at that resolution.

  32. Rick says:

Try taking a screenshot (printscreen) and pasting it into an image editor and seeing what the size of the image is, if your monitor doesn’t support displaying resolution information.

  33. Alex says:

Just a question, will it show the resolution in the Options screen? I use the editor, open up the game, and it says 640×480. Is this normal?

  34. Rick says:

Yes, it will show 640×480 for resolutions that are not normally listed in-game. It’s normal.

  35. Alex says:

    Okay, cool. Thanks a lot.

  36. Adpa says:

Can you add FOV adjustment to the tool so we can have proper FOV at 3840×1024 for us with triple monitor setups? Many thanks in advance and all the hard work you’ve put in so far, Rick!

can you give link to patch

  39. EdLazow says:

It’s not working for me. Everytime I click on it an error message comes up saying “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135).” Is there any other wayto change the resolution?

  40. Rick says:

That error indicates you don’t have .NET 3.5 installed.

However, if you allow Steam to patch the game up to the latest version any widescreen resolutions you wish to use should be present.
