Steam Achievement Manager 4.0

With a recent update to Steam, Steam Achievement Manager was broken again due to a change in the Steam API which requires a valid application ID in order to initialize the API. I’ve redone Steam Achievement Manager from scratch (well, reusing the older code in a new project) to reorganize it into a functional state again. There’s been a good amount of changes since 3.1, that include, but not limited to:

  1. The game picker now downloads a list of games that have achievements from my site which allows me to update the list of games without having to release a new version.
  2. The game picker downloads game logo images from the Steam website, and it looks pretty snazzy.
  3. It’s been broken up into two executables, SAM.Picker.exe and SAM.Game.exe, Picker is what lists and allows you to select a game, when a game is selected (double-clicked), it launches Game which allows you to alter the state of your achievements.

Now in version 4.0!

Lots of good changes. You can download the new version of Steam Achievement Manager on its page.

Also, new games listed as of 4.0:

  1. Bullet Candy
  2. D.I.P.R.I.P. Warm Up
  3. Galactic Bowling
  4. Gravitron 2
  5. Left 4 Dead Demo
  6. Mr. Robot
  7. Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode Two
  8. Space Trader
  9. Spectraball
  10. Starscape
  11. Tank Universal
  12. World of Goo

I’m getting an error with this version – any time I double click a game that I have it says “failed.” I’ve tried restarting Steam a few times to no avail. Any ideas?

  2. Rick says:

This means it failed to start SAM.Game.exe. You did extract everything in the ZIP to a single directory right?

    Many thanks for the update.

  7. David says:

Hello. Just a quick question: I’m planning on creating a stats resetter for TF2. I was going to look through your code to see how you reference steam_api.dll, etc, for a starting point. However, I see that you dotfuscated your code. I was wondering if you could possibly give me some tips on creating this application. Thanks so much!

  8. Rick says:

Stats resetting is unfortunately not possible, the Steam Community stuff will ignore any stat adjustments that are lower than the current stat values.

  9. David says:

AH damn. That sucks. Well, thanks for letting me know. Interesting how you can reset achievements and not stats.

I’ve noticed since Steam moved Left 4 Dead statistics, game settings and saves on a central server (The Steamcloud) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(content_delivery)#Steamcloud) that the Left 4 Dead achievements that I “unlocked” using Steam Achievement Manager 4.0 don’t work once I boot up the game… but in game I can “unlock” the achievements I don’t have and it sticks… until I boot up Left 4 Dead again. This seems to be the work of the Steamcloud, unintentional or not this would kind of stuff up the Team Fortress 2 achievements once Team Fortress 2’s stuff (statistics, game settings and saves) migrates to the Steamcloud because it only remembers the achievements that the user has officially unlocked (even if you unlocked them when the game stuff wasn’t on the Steamcloud)… for some reason.
    I hope this helps… somehow.
